Our climate finance leadership
As a significant asset owner, and an influential Canadian environmental funder, the Foundation has a responsibility to exercise strong leadership in the financial sector and among our peers to reshape the logic of capital markets. This is why we seek to create, support and engage with numerous initiatives to help move the needle on the financial industry.
Our initiatives
LC3 is a partnership between seven local centres and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to help city regions to reach their full emissions reduction potential while at the same time unlocking co-benefits for local communities. The Trottier Family Foundation is one of the initial funders of LC3.
TFF's involvement in creating LC3 also involved the Foundation establishing a TAF-like entity for the greater Montreal region. The Trottier Foundation established the Greater Montreal Climate Fund in 2020 and it received a $32.5M endowment through LC3. Local decarbonization efforts on transportation and buildings are anticipated.
The Montreal Climate Partnership aims to mobilize economic, philanthropic, institutional and community forces to accelerate the decarbonization of the metropolis. On top of being one of the initial funders of the project, the Foundation is involved in the Partnership's finance working group.
The Foundation participated in the Finance committee's advisory committee for the Quebec government’s Green Economy Plan.
Impact United is a broad-based, peer-to-peer community and movement of investors seeking to mobilize capital towards social, economic and environmental justice. Impact United seeks to connect individuals and organizations to share, learn, and collaborate with each other, collect and share new insights and knowledge for the collective benefit of the community and facilitate and support shared actions within the community.
TFF participated in the Municipal Impact Investment Fund (MIIF) advisory committee, which aims to accelerate the sourcing, decision making and implementation of sustainable infrastructure projects in Canadian municipalities.
As one of the university's long-standing donors, the Foundation is actively engaging with McGill on the adoption of responsible investment practice standards. We also encouraged UQAM to divest from fossil fuels.
The Trottier Foundation is a member of the Responsible Investment Association (RIA), Canada’s industry association for responsible investment.
